Please pause and think for a moment; what would it be like to be free of that fear? Would it help your life positively? Would it give you greater freedom to do what you want, without the worry of running into your fear? How has that fear restricted you in the past and…..how would it effect you in the future? If it doesn’t restrict you or have any negative effects on your quality of life, then it probably isn’t much of an issue. However, if it does affect you or restrict your choices in any way, then perhaps it’s time to take effective action and do something about it. What tends to happen?

Fears and Phobias are usually learned when we are very young. It’s not your fault that you have this fear; your mind learned it with the intention of protecting you in the future. It would rather you over-respond to ensure you’re safe, than be in danger. Your unconscious mind has this fear in the memory bank and when something connected to it is seen or experienced, then the phobic response will kick in automatically to get you to take evasive action.

 

We can learn fear or phobic responses to any number of things. Some very common phobias are: spiders, dogs, heights, enclosed spaces, open spaces, the dark, flying on a plane and so on, but there are many hundreds of others. It’s neither weired or stupid to have any of these responses and fears, no matter what they are. Quite the contrary; your mind is super smart and did the best thing it could do for you in the moment….it learned to protect you from a perceived threat.

How can Hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is an effective way of communicating with your unconscious mind. It’s your unconscious mind that is causing you to respond to this fear AND it’s your unconscious mind that can change this. Don’t get me wrong; you don’t need to start liking this thing…whatever it is. I personally don’t ‘like’ heights, but I have changed how my mind responds so that I can feel calm and safe when I am in fact safe. If I was to start leaning over my balcony edge, then a natural fear response would kick in and influence me to behave more safely. However, I can now cope with heights far better than once upon a time where my knees would knock together (literally when I attempted a rock climb) and I would feel sick just getting near an edge at any height.

 

Hypnotherapy allows the unconscious mind to reprocess it’s prior learnings. This way the mind has a chance to make the key distinctions that it never had before. For example, I know that leaning over a balcony could be dangerous, so I don’t do it. However, having coffee while sat on the balcony (safely inside it) is fine and I can now feel safe and comfortable doing so. Your mind will not become stupid and allow you to fall into any dangers. It’s a matter of enabling it to make some key distinctions so that you do keep yourself safe from any real harm, but your perceptions don’t give you unnecessary fear. I will never allow myself to get too close to an edge when up high, but I can now happily rock climb, abseil and I’ve even done a sky dive without an undue fear response.
